Charlton forward Alfie May targets League One golden boot after hitting 20-goal mark

He’s notched 20 League One goals for the campaign – and now Alfie May has set his sights on winning the division’s golden boot.

The forward, who joined Charlton after departing Cheltenham Town last summer, grabbed a brace in Saturday’s 3-2 home win over Carlisle and currently sits top of the third-tier charts – three goals ahead of Barnsley’s Devante Cole and Stevenage’s Jamie Reid.

May has now made it three campaigns on the spin where he’s hit the 20-goal mark in League One, having bagged 23 and 20 in his last two seasons with the Robins.

May said: “I’m on four in four now. Now I’m back on a run. Hopefully I can kick on in the next eight games and see where it can take me. I want to win the golden boot, that’s what I’m aiming for. And to see where we as a team can finish.

“When you’re in and around it this late on, it’s a great personal goal. It’s a good achievement. I finished joint-second and third over the last couple of seasons. I want it. I’ll be trying my hardest to keep scoring.

“You keep working hard every day on the training pitch and try and be better every day. That’s what I want to be. I still want to score goals. I set my own targets at the start of the year. Completed one today with getting 20 league goals. It’s time to kick on.

“The last couple of years I’ve hit 20 league goals. I want to carry on and see where it takes me. If that’s 30 league goals, that will be the next achievement.”

The 30-year-old’s Charlton career started at lightning pace with 19 goals by early December but then stalled with just one in his next 13 outings in all competitions.

He is now back on the right path with four in his last four games.

“As a striker, you kick yourself when you ain’t scoring,” added May.

“You feel like you aren’t doing it for the team. I got bought into this club to score goals. I know I scored goals at the start of the season but when you go on a bit of a goal drought you start doubting yourself. To be fair to the gaffer, he’s had a few chats with me and said: ‘You know where the net is. Don’t be frustrated, it will come.’

“I go on streaks and then miss five or six games where I don’t score. But I’m doing it for a bigger club now. There’s probably a little bit more pressure on me. I thrive off that. When you have your doubters, you put it in the back of your head and make sure you prove people wrong. That’s what I’ve been doing my whole career.”
