Abstract expressionism returns in an exhibition by London artist Neil Weerdmeester this spring

Neil Weerdmeester, a member of The London Group, presents a new series of more than 20 paintings that extends the legacy of abstraction, confronting the viewer with the physicality of paint.

The exhibition will take place on April 17-23 at The Cello factory in Waterloo.

Created in household gloss paint, the intricate surfaces of these works lead us to reflect on today’s digitally manipulated instant selfie society.

Neil said: “These paintings record a passionate gesture and a chance encounter where every incident creates an opening and each action a new beginning drawing us ever closer to examine the very act of painting.

“My aim is imagination without resolution hope without fear.

“Painting offers a refreshing critique of the transient nature of information in contemporary society, referencing a common archive of a Super 8 Polaroid past and a new digital future my work records a passionate gesture and a chance encounter in a time and place.

“Beauty in an age of digital manipulation the works draw you ever closer to examine the very act of painting where the unravelling of a new source of ideas creates a new opening and each opening a new beginning imagination without resolution, image without text, a reality which we can neither see nor describe but one we know exists”

Neil’s work has been exhibited in New York, Toronto, Amsterdam and London Art Fairs at leading contemporary art galleries.

These new paintings represent a departure from his previous work and aim to push the boundary of painting to the extreme.

They often involve eight to 10 hours of continuous sessions re-working the paint on aluminium and MDF – dragging colour across the surface, pouring it on and taking it off to create the final flourish.
