Fred’s firefighting skills and dedication to serve have not gone unnoticed

A civic award has been handed to Frederick ‘Fred’ Edwine –  a firefighter for the London Fire Brigade – for his continuing dedication to the community.

The 27-year-old ex-paratrooper from Greenwich is no stranger to recognition for his passion for public services and he is seen as a shining example, having been raised by a single mum in a council block.

He served in the British Army with distinction for more than five years before taking on lifeguard duties in Greenwich and then passing firefighter training first time around.

He has since completed many rescues and even saved a few cats stuck in buildings.

Last year, he was awarded the Deputy Commissioner’s Commendation for putting out a cladded high-rise flat fire while off duty, using just pots and pans.

This month, he has been given an award from the Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Dr Dominic Mbang, for his work in the community.

Councillor Asli Mohammed noticed his passion for serving the community and nominated him for the award.

The civic award was given to him in appreciation and recognition of some of his outstanding contribution of the social, economic and physical well-being of Greenwich.

His younger brother, Martial Godo, a professional footballer on loan from Fulham to Wigan, wrote on X: “Will forever be gratified to applaud you for not only being an amazing role model to the family, your colleagues and everyone in the community.

“But also overcoming the challenges you’ve faced to become the great brother and man you’re.

“Congratulations on winning the civic award.”

Friend Maya Maria said: “He is a pillar in the community of Greenwich, particularly to young people whom he provides guidance and support.

“He motivates and coaches’ people, many from underrepresented groups to achieve and dream big. He encourages them to join a career in the public services and helps them in every step of the process. By doing this he has inspired hundreds of people to join a career they never imagined possible.

“Despite all the challenges he has faced, he uses it as motivation to do better, He believes everyone has the right to achieve and dream big no matter their background and no limit should be placed on anyone.”
