Rehab centre celebrates 40 years of transforming lives

By Kelsey McCabe

On Wednesday, an alcohol-dependency focused rehabilitation centre celebrated its fortieth anniversary.

Mount Carmel Rehabilitation Centre, in Aldrington Road, Tooting, focuses on helping people overcome alcohol dependency in a safe and inclusive environment affordable for both private and public funders.

With an emphasis on personalised, comprehensive care, Mount Carmel also helps individuals combat related issues including drug addiction, eating disorders, and gambling.

Celebrating the anniversary, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “Too many Londoners have their lives ruined by alcohol dependency. It’s not just the individual drinker but also their family, friends and communities that suffer.

“I know from my experience as a local MP of the important work Mount Carmel does in helping people recover.

“Effective, accessible and affordable rehabilitation is vital.”

Mount Carmel has been supported by a number of Tooting MP’s in recent years, including Mr Khan, who served as the MP for Tooting from 2010 through 2016, as well as the current MP for the area, Rosena Allin-Khan.

Mount Carmel thanked its patron, John Taylor, for his decade of work with the centre and his willingness to share his experiences with clients.

The anniversary celebration began with coffee and tea, followed by a presentation and film about the rehabilitation centre’s history and mission.

In the afternoon, Mount Carmel welcomed a number of guest speakers, including individuals who have graduated from the center and returned to share their stories of successful transitions into recovery.

The celebration concluded with a short lunch reception, followed by a closing performance from the centre’s choir.
