Some Charlton Athletic players need to ‘prove’ they can be part of Nathan Jones’ future plans
Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones says some of his squad from the 2023-24 League One campaign need to prove they are part of his plans for the new season.
The Addicks resume action at Wigan Athletic on August 10.
Jones has talked before about needing to cut the size of his playing personnel.
Midfielder Scott Fraser spent the latter stages of last season on loan at Hearts but is still contracted to Charlton for another 12 months.
We have already reported that the South Londoners would not stand in the way of exits for goalkeepers Harry Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
“We’ve had honest conversations with everyone at the end of the season,” Jones told the South London Press this week. “Those conversations will manifest themselves in the coming weeks.
“There are some we need to have good pre-seasons, for example, because they were on the periphery last season but we believe they can play for us and we can move forward with those. But they have to prove that. Then if they don’t prove that we have decisions in two, three, four or five weeks time.
“It’s an ongoing process.
“What categorically has to happen is that when this window shuts, everyone looks at Charlton and says: ‘Yeah, they have a stronger squad’.”
