Council approves redevelopment of Waitrose site with 353 new homes

The John Lewis Partnership (JLP) was granted planning permission last week to demolish and rebuild a Waitrose site with more than 300 new homes for rent.

The decision, made by Bromley council’s Development Control Committee on Thursday, grants planning approval for 353 new homes – 30 of which will be “affordable”.

The new homes will be part of the redevelopment of the Waitrose store and site next to Bromley South railway station, which is set to be refurbished and extended – with more than 70 per cent of customer parking retained.

Councillor Alexa Michael, chairwoman of the Development Control Committee, said: “This development will make an essential contribution of much-needed housing in Bromley, while also providing a significant boost to the local economy.

“The proposal represents a clear net benefit to the borough and enhances local housing supply, which optimises land use on this highly-accessible brownfield site at the edge of Bromley’s town centre.”

Some residents had opposed the scheme, including the Bromley Town Ward councillors, but the majority of the 250 responses received in the consultation were supportive, a council spokesman said.

Works are currently scheduled to begin in 2025, with construction expected to be carried out over a 45-month period.
