Wimbledon land Hull left-back on loan

AFC Wimbledon have signed Hull City left-back James Furlong on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old has one Hull start to his name – starting the FA Cup third round replay against Birmingham City last season.

He has been out of action since with a knee injury.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan with Motherwell.

Furlong turned out 16 times for the Scottish Premiership side, playing predominantly as a left-sided midfielder.

Ex-Brighton youngster Furlong started his career with Shamrock before moving to the Seagulls.

He made one first-team appearance for Brighton – turning out in an EFL Cup outing against Forest Green.

Furlong replaces Jack Currie, who was sold to Oxford United this summer.

He told Wimbledon’s website: “I want to play as many games as possible, push on as a player and of course I want to help the Club get back to League One as soon as possible.

“Hopefully we can achieve that together this season. I want to get on the pitch, blend in with the boys and get settled in because I want to make an impact here.

“Things developed quickly. I met with the manager and all I heard was positive things – he really sold the loan move to me. As soon as I heard of the interest, I just wanted to get started straight away.

“Wimbledon want me to show what I can do, help the team, fit into the style of play, get forward, give everything and produce something that the fans will like. I can’t wait to get into the stadium and show them what I can do.”

Johnnie Jackson said: “James brings something to the squad that we are missing. He can play left-back or left wing-back so it allows us to be more flexible.

“He had a great loan experience in Scotland last season and sees this as the perfect next step. He is young, hungry and wants to come in and help us win games.”

Head of football operations Craig Cope added: “We’re really excited to welcome James to the group, he is someone we have monitored for a while and have had to be patient. We are pleased he is here now and look forward to seeing him impact us this season.”
