‘That’s why we brought him in’ – Dons boss delighted as Joe Pigott opens League Two account in Cheltenham win

Johnnie Jackson was delighted for Joe Pigott after the Leyton Orient loanee opened his League Two account for the season in the 1-0 win at Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

The 30-year-old scored in the 2-1 EFL Cup win over Bromley but got his first League Two goal for the club after rejoining this summer in the 67th minute when he turned home Ryan Johnson’s cross.

Wimbledon bounced back to winning ways after suffering their first defeat of the season in the 2-0 loss at Bromley in the league last Saturday.

“I’m buzzing with that one,” Jackson told Wimbledon’s YouTube channel.

“I thought we deserved to win today. I thought we were really good in both aspects of our play – what we did with and without the ball.

“We had to dig in a little bit towards the end, as is natural in a game where you defend the lead away from home.

“As far as away performances go, that’s right up there.”

Pigott joined on a season-long loan and started alongside fellow striker Omar Bugiel.

“I’m delighted for Joe,” added Jackson.

“He sometimes beats himself up a little too much – he’s his own biggest critic at times.

“He’s getting the game time now, and he’s starting to look sharper and better every day.

“Today was the right time to give him that start up there with Omar.

“It’s an unbelievable skill to control that finish that he showed. Reasons like that are why we brought him in.”
