Millwall boss happy at arrival of Reading winger and Celtic midfielder but wants more activity ahead of transfer window deadline day

Millwall head coach Neil Harris is still pushing for new signings as the transfer window enters its final week.

The Lions recently secured the services of Femi Azeez and Daniel Kelly from Reading and Celtic respectively. The latter is seen as a future prospect but due to the lack of depth in Millwall’s squad he may be called upon slightly earlier than planned.

Azeez made his debut as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Hull City.

“Femi came in on Wednesday, so he was in the building for Thursday morning, ” said Harris. “He gives us the end product – goals and assists. In League One last year he was one of the best wide players in the division.

“He’s got attributes that serve a Millwall winger well. He carries the ball, he’s got pace and energy. He didn’t start the game today and has got a lot to learn in a short space of time – but he wants to learn.

“He has been well-coached by Ruben Selles [Reading manager] in the last 12 months and we really look forward to working with him.”

It has been a challenging summer for Millwall with recruitment challenges made all the more frustrating by a series of injuries sustained during pre-season.

Harris knows more reinforcements are needed to bolster the squad.

On a positive note, Japhet Tanganga returned to the side after his three-match suspension. Tanganga was sidelined following a red card on the final day of last season at Swansea but came straight back into the team at Hull.

The Lions posted their first clean sheet in the Championship this season after conceding seven goals in their opening two league games.

“It makes us look so much healthier doesn’t it?” said Harris. “Japhet back in the group today, Femi has come in and affected the game from the bench, Murray Wallace was back on the bench – he didn’t affect the game today but he gives so much leadership and is a great option if required.

“We do look a lot healthier. We need to get Zian Flemming back fit. It would be a real bonus to us if that was before the international break and then we are still looking to add in the window.”
