Former Charlton Athletic goalkeeper set to be named boss of League One club

Former Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot is set to be named as the new manager of League One side Crawley Town.

Elliot – currently in charge of National League side Gateshead – held talks with the Red Devils over the vacant managerial role at The Broadfield Stadium after Scott Lindsey left to join League Two side Milton Keynes.

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Elliot and his assistant Louis Storey joined Gateshead on a caretaker basis in October before being given the roles permanently in June. They won the EFL FA Trophy with the club at Wembley in May after beating Solihull Moors on penalties.

The 38-year-old took the club to a sixth-place finish in the National League last season, but they denied a spot in the play-offs after failing to meet the EFL’s requirement of securing a 10-year lease on their stadium.

Greenwich-born Elliot progressed through Charlton’s academy to make 109 senior appearances for the club.

He also had spells with Watford and Notts County in his career.
