Oliver Glasner says Crystal Palace were not good enough in Brentford defeat

Oliver Glasner said his Crystal Palace side’s “OK” performance was not good enough to get past Brentford as they fell to a 2-1 defeat on Sunday at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles went closest to opening the scoring in the 56th minute when Eberechi Eze’s free-kick from the edge of the box clipped Sepp van den Berg and hit Mark Flekken’s post.

Dean Henderson was then called into action minutes later to tip Keane Lewis-Potter’s curling shot over the crossbar.

The Bees were awarded a penalty in the 61st minute when Maxcence Lacroix hacked down Nathan Collins inside the area.

Bryan Mbeumo missed the original spot kick but was given another chance to give the west Londoners the lead after Marc Guehi was adjudged to have encroached before the penalty was taken.

The Frenchman made no mistake the second time around to put Brentford ahead.

Thomas Frank’s side doubled their advantage with 10 minutes of normal time left to play when Kevin Schade out-jumped Chris Richards to head Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross beyond Dean Henderson.

Palace pulled one back through debutant Romain Esse, who met a Daniel Munoz pass along the face of goal in the 84th minute.

The ex-Millwall winger scored with his very first touch after being substituted on in the 82nd minute, but Glasner’s side were unable to complete the comeback.

“This was a game where both teams neutralised each other for most of the minutes,” said Glasner.

“It looked like the team who made the first mistakes would lose it. Unfortunately, before the penalty, we made too many mistakes – four in a row in our box.

“Being 1-0 down made it more difficult. We had a great reaction after going 2-0 down. We tried everything, but we have to accept that we were not that good to get an equaliser.

“We could do better. We’re always self-critical. Many parts were OK, but being OK was not good enough against a good Brentford side.

“Especially when one or two situations decide a game. We didn’t have our best game against Leicester but we scored in the right moments and took the win.

“Today we didn’t do it. We made the mistake – not Brentford. Both teams were almost on the same level.

“We have to accept it even though we’re disappointed.”
