Brits take centre stage on Day 4

British players feature heavily on Day 4 of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships tomorrow.

Cameron Norrie, conqueror of veteran Denis Istomin in the first round yesterday, got his wish to play on Centre Court – and will be first up against former US Open runner-up and number eight seed Kei Nishikori from Japan, who defeated Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in round one.

Speaking of his contest with Nishikori, Scot Norrie said: “I think it’s going to be a battle. I’m happy that I’ve played a couple of big servers.

“It will be nice to kind of get a lot of rhythm against him. I’m just going to go out there, make it as physical as I can. Nothing to lose really. He’s the highest seed. I just want to go into it with the underdog mentality.

“I know I’m good enough to beat him. I know if I put my best level out there, I’m going to be trouble for anyone. Definitely he’s playing well. He likes the grass. When he’s on, he’s kind of tough to take down. I think it’s going to be a really good match.

“Hopefully I’m on a bigger court, I think I play well on the bigger kind of stadiums. It will be a good experience for me to be on Centre Court or Court 1.”

Following Norrie on Centre will be British number one Johanna Konta, who beat Romania’s Ana Bogdan 7-5, 6-2 yesterday. Konta, the number 11 seed, faces world number 38 Katerina Siniakova.

Konta, who reached the semi-finals at the All-England Club in 2017, is Britain’s best chance of success this year. She said: “There’s seven other British players in the next round. I like to think we’re all in it together.

“I definitely am just really pleased to be playing the tennis that I’m playing in general. I don’t necessarily look at what my ranking is, how that compares to other players in the country, outside of the country.

“I’m on my own journey to grow and get better. I’m enjoying that process. I’m just really pleased I was able to play a good first round and get an opportunity to play a second round.”

Another Brit, Jay Clarke, will face the toughest test possible when he takes on Roger Federer in Thursday’s second match on No.1 Court.

Clarke reached the second round after victory over US qualifier Noah Rubin in four sets, while eight-time Wimbledon champion Federer overcame South Africa’s Lloyd Harris, also in four sets, after dropping the first.

World number 182 Harriet Dart, another Brit, faces world number 121 Beatriz Haddad Maia on No.12 Court, while Dan Evans, who overcame Argentine Federico Delbonis yesterday, will face Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia on Court 2.

Elsewhere Nick Kyrgios faces Rafa Nadal in possibly the game of the day, third on Centre Court, and Serena Wiliams plays Kaja Juvan later in the day on No.1 Court.
