Bermondsey London Underground station sign could be fixed by Christmas

A London Underground station’s sign could be finally fixed in time for Christmas.

A chunk of Bermondsey Tube’s sign has been missing since May when a lorry reversed into the station’s distinctive canopy.

Commuters using the station have been greeted with “Station” instead of “Bermondsey Station” ever since.

Transport for London (TfL) has now said it will repair the sign by December and “hopefully” in time for Christmas, according to a Southwark councillor.

Liberal Democrat member for North Bermondsey, Rachel Bentley, on Monday tweeted: “Latest from @TfL is that #Bermondsey tube station’s sign will be fixed in December. Hopefully in time for Christmas”

The December date is later than the date TfL previously set for fixing the sign. Last week Cllr Bentley told Southwark News that transport officials had indicated in September that the station frontage would be repaired within eight weeks.

The sign would be fixed by November 3, according to that timeline. Cllr Bentley said she was chasing monthly updates from TfL on the issue.

She added that Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat and deputy chair of City Hall’s transport committee, had also reported the damage.

Bermondsey Underground Station opened in 1999. It was one of eleven new stations that formed the Jubilee Line extension through East London.

It was designed with the intention of an office block being constructed above it. TfL is yet to realise the second part of the scheme.

A TfL spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “Earlier this year, the Bermondsey station sign was damaged while a lorry was reversing. We are working to replace the sign as soon as possible.”

It added that the lorry collided with the station at a slow speed and no-one was injured.
