By Claudia Lee

Works by British Land to restore the historic Canada Dock will begin this week as part of a wider area regeneration under the Canada Water Masterplan.

The project will create a 170m boardwalk and a dipping pond in efforts to transform the dock into a space for local people to enjoy and restore it as a habitat for wildlife.

James Turley, Project Director at British Land, said: “Canada Dock is a focal point for the area and a large part of Canada Water’s history.

“Over the next 18 months, British Land will be sensitively restoring the waterfront and bringing it into a new lease of life.”

British Land, in partnership with contractor Galldris will create three distinctive wetland habitats along with seven new islands.

The developer is working closely with the London Wildlife Trust to enhance biodiversity and provide a haven for birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates.

The project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2024, with further details being made available during the refurbishment.

The Canada Water Masterplan is a partnership between British Land and Southwark Council to create a new town centre for London.

The mixed-use scheme was granted permission in 2019, it proposed to deliver new work, retail, leisure, entertainment, education and community spaces, and around 3,000 new homes.
