Charlton boss explains why flying winger Corey Blackett-Taylor has become “more dangerous”
Corey Blackett-Taylor collected a hat-trick of assists for Charlton in their 4-0 win over Reading yesterday with head coach Michael Appleton explaining why he feels the winger has become “more dangerous”.
The 26-year-old, who is due to be out of contract at the end of the season, has been one of the club’s most consistent performers in the 2023-24 campaign.
Blackett-Taylor has scored four goals and collected six assists.
All three of Charlton’s opening goals against the Royals came from his passes.
Blackett-Taylor has started all of the Addicks’ League One matches this season but was replaced by Panutche Camara in the 78th minute.
“Once we got the third we felt it was a good opportunity to save his legs a little bit for Tuesday,” Appleton told the South London Press.
“The one thing that was really noticeable playing against Corey in the past, and seeing videos of the games prior, was that everything was to feet. And he can do that and I still want him to do that – because we want to isolate him in one-v-one situations.
“But I think he has brought a dimension to his game where he is looking to run in behind without the ball which is making him more dangerous because, all of a sudden, the full-backs and centre-halves are thinking ‘is he going to come to feet or is he going to run away?’
“With the pace he has got, he’s electric. Slowly but surely we’re bringing different things into his game that, for me, makes him a more valuable player.”
