Charlton ownership leaving managerial appointment to technical director Andy Scott

Charlton Athletic technical director Andy Scott will be the driving force in the club’s search for a new manager.

The Addicks parted company with boss Dean Holden on Sunday evening.

The club have made approaches to managers both in jobs and also out of work, with some of those expressing an interest in the vacancy, about being placed on the shortlist of candidates. It had been reported yesterday that Peterborough United’s Darren Ferguson had declined the opportunity to speak to the South Londoners.

Some supporters have expressed an interest in Lee Bowyer returning. The South London Press understands former Charlton midfielder has received no approach. Bowyer won the League One play-off final after succeeding Karl Robinson in the Valley hotseat before opting to quit for Birmingham City not long after Thomas Sandgaard completed his takeover.

Holden’s position looked strong at the start of the campaign, especially with new owners SE7 Partners advocating so strongly for his appointment when they entered into exclusivity over a buyout in December.

But a run of four straight League One defeats, leaving the Addicks 19th in the standings, spelled the end.

Charlie Methven, who acted as a spokesman for the new ownership group after they acquired the club off Sandgaard, made clear in the summer that the football operation would be left in the hands of Scott, with total trust placed in his expertise and knowledge.

Chairman Jim Rodwell will also provide some input and assistance on the managerial search.

The Addicks are still expected to be active before Friday’s 11pm deadline – both in terms of incoming and outgoing deals. How much the fact they do not have a permanent manager in place will affect their ability to attract their targets, only time will tell.

Former Charlton captain Jason Pearce has taken interim charge of the team, assisted by Anthony Hayes, and will be in charge for Saturday’s home game against Fleetwood Town if the interviews and background checks on candidates continues beyond the weekend.

Pearce has also brought in ex-Addicks goalkeeper Steve Henderson as temporary goalkeeper coach to replace Glyn Shimell, who followed Dean Holden out the SE7 exit door.
