Crystal Palace boss not expecting Chelsea midfielder Gallagher back in his squad

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is not expecting to work with Conor Gallagher again this season.

The midfielder won senior England honours during his loan stay with the Eagles in the last campaign.

Gallagher was also voted Player of the Year by the Palace fans.

But he returned to parent club Chelsea and has expressed his desire to crack Thomas Tuchel’s first-team.

Vieira – asked if there was a chance that Gallagher could be back with the Eagles – told Press Association: “At the moment I don’t think there is any chance because he is a Chelsea player. He did fantastically well for us and he is in a pre-season with Chelsea. Honestly we wish him all the best.

“I don’t think there is a way to get him back.”

Gallagher needs regular football again in the new campaign to cement his spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup.

Asked if it was a gamble to stick with the Blues, he responded: “You can say it’s a gamble but I feel like I’m ready for a step up.

“If there is a chance to be a part of the squad at Chelsea and part of the team then I can’t turn it down. I feel like I’ve got to have belief in myself that I can help improve this team and I can show the fans and the boss what I can do.

“I have got a lot of work to do and I have got to be confident in myself.”
