Crystal Palace striker set for transfer window stay

Jean-Philippe Mateta is set to stay at Crystal Palace this summer.

The South London Press understands talks over a contract extension will be opened for the 26-year-old.

Palace turned down bids from RB Leipzig this summer.

The first offer was to take Mateta on loan. Roy Hodgson’s side also rejected a follow-up €8million permanent bid from the Bundesliga outfit.

Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach were both keen on taking Mateta on loan.

The former Lyon and Le Havre forward scored a 22-minute hat-trick in Tuesday night’s EFL Cup win over Championship side Plymouth. It was the first time a Crystal Palace player had scored three goals in a competitive game since Dwight Gayle’s hat-trick against Charlton in 2015.

Mateta joined the South Londoners initially on an 18-month loan deal from Mainz in January 2021, with Palace making the deal a permanent one in January 2022.

The Frenchman has featured 69 times for the Eagles, scoring 13 times and picking up one assist.
