Decisions are still to be made on all out of contract players including Albie Morgan – Dean Holden

Dean Holden says he’s still yet to make final decisions on the future of Charlton players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of this season – including that of Albie Morgan.

Midfielder Morgan bagged his fifth goal of the season during the 6-0 win over Shrewsbury on Saturday. The academy graduate has made just 17 league starts this campaign and will still have to convince Holden that he should be offered a new deal.

Holden explained: “Either way, whether you’ve made your decision on a player or not at this stage of the season, you’ve got to be a bit careful as there’s still some games to play. I’ve got an idea of the squad that I want for next season in terms of numbers and personnel.

“Both internally and bringing some players in from outside the club. Decisions are still to be made on all the squad, but when the lads are performing like that, that can only be good for them.

“Me and Albie get on great. We have a lot of conversations. I love him to bits. In terms of personality, he’s the type of guy I can relate to. He’s a winner. Wears his heart on his sleeve. At times that can get the better of him but that’s just who is as a footballer. He’s been a bit stop-start. I’ve had a good conversation with him.

“That’s his fourth start on the spin. He had this feeling that every time the team got beat, or didn’t play so good, he was the first one out. I think that’s happened prior to me coming into the job with previous managers. He probably needed that little bit of a run.

“Certain players and certain personalities try and have the best game they could possibly have in 60 minutes knowing he might get taken off. That can sometimes take away from the performance of the team.

“We had a good chat prior to this run in the team. He’s shown in the last three performances what a good player he is. He’s a fantastic passer of the ball, can clearly score goals. Defensively he’ll have a go, get stuck in and compete.

“He’s out of contract in the summer. He’s another player I’ve got to have a conversation with. He played well today.”
