East Dulwich students who moved to the UK during their studies celebrate top GCSE results

Students at East Dulwich schools are celebrating amazing GCSE results, after coming to the UK during secondary school.

Gayatri Subhash, who joined Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich from overseas at the start of Year 11 and attained 9 GCSEs at grade 8 and above.

Two students from Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich also achieved impressive results after coming to the academy in Year 9 speaking very little English. 

Cristobal Cortes Henao received two Distinctions, one 9, two 6s, four 5s and one 4 and Justin Ponce-Lascano received 5 in Maths and 4 in English Literature and Language as well as a pass in all his other subjects.

Other top achievers from the academies include Maryam Shabaz, from the girls’ school, who attained 11 GCSEs at grade 8 and above.

Carrie Senior, Principal of Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich, said: “Huge congratulations to our GCSE class of 2021 and to our wonderful parents, carers and teachers who have supported the girls through such a tumultuous two years. 

“We are delighted that their results reflect their hard work and determination to succeed, through two lockdowns, multiple periods for some of isolating at home and huge adjustments to how they learn. A thank you also to their teachers, teaching assistants and our support staff, who helped our girls carry on learning.”

At Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich, Abid Ahmed achieved six 9’s, two 8’s and two Distinction*.

Anson Nguyen Dac, who has achieved seven 9’s, two 8’s and two Distinction* and Syed Ahmed, who achieved five 9’s, four 8’s and one Distinction*.

Peter Groves, Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich, said:“We are delighted for our Year 11 today. After a tumultuous year, they have all shown real commitment and resilience to achieve these results and should be proud of what they’ve achieved. We look forward to seeing many of them back in September in our Sixth Form.  

“Congratulations to Abid, Anson and Syed – not only for their excellent grades today but also for the impressive way in which all three of them have conducted themselves during their time at the academy. 

“Their results are well deserved, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.”

    The girl pictured above is named Maryam Shahbaz, not Maryam Hassan. Please can you change that. You can even check with the school again.
