Equipping youth to survive – and thrive

Empowering Young People: The LifeSkills Centre Prepares South London’s Youth for Independent Living

Many young people struggle with the transition to adulthood, lacking essential life skills.

Our Future LifeSkills Centre is bridging this gap, equipping 11 to 25-year-olds with the practical knowledge needed for
independent living.

Set in a purpose-built flat, the centre offers hands-on learning experiences.

All young people, including school leavers, care leavers and those preparing for university or work, engage in real-life tasks such as budgeting, cooking and managing a home.

The programme fosters confidence and self-sufficiency in a safe, supportive environment.

A Landmark Launch Event

On Wednesday, March 19, the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Jit Ranabhat, officially launched the Our Future LifeSkills Centre in Eltham.

The event welcomed social workers, educators and local borough professionals, as well as representatives from neighbouring alternative education provisions – all of whom praised the initiative for addressing a vital need in the community.

Guests toured the facility, witnessing interactive demonstrations covering home management, budgeting and career readiness.

Discussions explored collaboration opportunities to expand the programme’s reach and impact.

Mayor Jit Ranabhat highlighted the importance of such an initiative, stating: “The transition to adulthood can be challenging, and too often young people are left without the necessary life skills to navigate independent living.

“The Our Future LifeSkills Centre is a truly invaluable resource that ensures young people in Greenwich and beyond have the support, knowledge and confidence to take on their futures.

“This programme has the potential to positively change lives, and I am proud to see it launched here in our borough.”

Kareena Taylor, chief executive of Our Future Tutoring, also emphasised the centre’s significance, saying: “Education should extend beyond academics.

“We empower young people with essential skills, bridging the gap between learning and real-life application. This isn’t just about survival—it’s about thriving.”

Practical Learning for a Stronger Future

The LifeSkills Centre provides essential training in:

  • Independent Living Skills – cooking, cleaning and home management.
  •  Financial Literacy – budgeting, paying bills and making informed financial decisions.
  • Time Management – balancing work, social life and responsibilities.
  • Social & Emotional Intelligence – communication, conflict resolution and relationship-building.
  • Career Readiness – CV writing, job applications and workplace professionalism.

Changing Lives, One Skill at a Time

For many young people – especially care leavers – the transition to adulthood can feel overwhelming.

The LifeSkills Centre is a crucial support system, preparing them for real-world challenges.

The programme has received enthusiastic engagement from schools, youth organisations and local authorities.

Mrs Taylor added: “Young people deserve to step into adulthood feeling prepared and empowered.”

As demand grows, the LifeSkills Centre is set to become a key resource for South London’s youth, ensuring they are equipped not just to survive but to thrive.
