Greenwich offering ‘swims for a quid’ to counter cost-of-living crisis

The social enterprise charity which operates leisure centres, libraries and children’s centres across Greenwich is offering low-cost swimming for both adults and families this winter.

The scheme is open to adult Greenwich One Card holders, with the ‘swim for a quid’ sessions available Monday -Friday 1.30-3.30pm (term-time only) at The Greenwich Centre, The Eltham Centre, Waterfront Leisure Centre and Thamesmere Leisure Centre.

The family swimming offer is available to groups of up to six people. These sessions are at The Greenwich Centre (Sunday noon-2pm); Waterfront (Wednesday 4-7pm); Eltham (Friday 5-7pm); and Thamesmere (Saturday 2-3.30pm and Sunday 1-3.30pm).

This new offer from the charity Better, in partnership with the council, is one of a number of free or low-cost programmes being set up to support residents cope with the current cost of living crisis.

Richard Gallagher, of Better, said: “We are proud to be working in close partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich to give residents the opportunity to swim affordably and stay active and well throughout the winter.

“We exist to improve the health and well-being of local communities by raising activity levels. Removing barriers to participation and encouraging residents to use their local leisure facilities has never been more important.”

Councillor Adel Khaireh, cabinet member for equality, culture and communities said: “We’re determined to provide essential support as well as ensuring families across the borough still live a good quality of life and continue to get out and stay active.

Bookings can be made at the centres or in advance, either online or via the Better App. For more information, please visit www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/london/greenwich/news/swimming-offers-for-one-card-holders .
