Jason McCarthy delight as he swaps Millwall for Wycombe + hopes he doesn’t leave Chairboys again

Jason McCarthy has spoken about his Millwall departure – and is determined to show he is a Championship footballer after sealing a return to Wycombe.

The Lions sold the right-back to the promoted Chairboys with the 24-year-old penning a deal until the summer of 2023.

It is McCarthy’s fourth spell with Wanderers. He was snapped up by Millwall last summer but headed back to his previous club in January.

“I’ve been wanting to get back here and I’ve been really trying to force it through,” he told the club’s YouTube channel.

“It was a no-brainer. I really believe I can play in the Championship. I’ve got there a couple of times having left Wycombe – but I never really dreamt or thought I would get to do it with Wycombe. I’m really excited.

“I really hope this is my final spell – I don’t want to go away again. This is home for me and my family. With the gaffer [Gareth Ainsowrth] he gets the best out of me. I’ve played my best football at Wycombe. He really makes you believe in yourself, you run through brick walls for him.

“I have a big point to prove in this league. I really believe I can make a noise in this league and the team can. I wouldn’t be coming here if I didn’t believe that.

“The Championship is a massive level up in terms of the intensity and athleticism. It suits us to be written off and everyone tipping us to go down. We used that last year and we used that the year before – it’s probably how we operate at our best. No-one is expecting anything of us in any fixture – wins will be massive.”

McCarthy was unable to feature for Wycombe in the play-off campaign after football returned following lockdown.

He sat out their final three matches, culminating in Wembley success over Oxford.

“It was tough and I was so full of mixed emotions,” said McCarthy. “I was delighted and so happy for the team. I was rooting for them and I knew the team would do it.

“I was so happy, I couldn’t stop crying when we won. I wanted to be there so much but I recognised the victory was a lot bigger than my own selfish ambition.

“I really feel I’m a stronger person and player for the experience of last year.”
