Just Stop Oil protesters attacked by driver in Vauxhall

Just Stop Oil protesters were physically assaulted by a furious driver this morning as they blocked the road, while two of them were arrested.

Video footage released by the climate action group shows a man running through their signs, pushing protesters off the road and smashing one person’s phone into the ground.

The footage also shows a 4×4 car mounting the pavement at speed where people were walking and wildly swerving back into road.

Just Stop Oil supporters have been slow-marching in the middle of roads across London on a nearly daily basis for seven weeks. They are demanding that the UK Government halts all licences and consents for new oil, gas and coal projects.

At around 8am, about 75 Just Stop Oil supporters, in four groups, began marching in west, east and South London.

Police arrested two Just Stop Oil supporters in Vauxhall for breaching the Public Order Act.

One of those arrested this morning, Aaron Gunning, spoke to camera as he was arrested. He said: “I’m Aaron. I’m 24 years old, I just graduated physics last year.

“I’ve been arrested here for peacefully marching in the road for about five minutes, before the police swooped in and started grabbing people, arresting me for demanding some level of action on the climate crisis, and now here I am in handcuffs.”

All marches were ended by the police by around 9.20am with further marches expected this morning.

Earlier today the Met tweeted: “Slow walking Just Stop Oil protestors on Vauxhall Bridge were issued with Section 12 conditions at 10.35am. They moved on to the pavement within one minute. The road is now clear.”
