Ballooniana! Circus-style theatre at the New Wimbledon Theatre

The popularity of vaudeville, cabaret and circus-style theatre is on the up and up.

Recent years have seen a programme of big top action on the South Bank and late-night burlesque performances in cities throughout the UK.

Ballooniana! is a play about the invention of the hot air balloon, narrated by clownish vaudevillians.

Alexander Knott and BoxLess Theatre are expected to deliver a combination of physical theatre, spoken word and specially composed music.

It’s an affecting and comedic drama about the relationship between the Montgolfier brothers – inventors of the hot air balloon.

The narrative is steeped in the belief that we can work together to overcome our fears and, quite literally, reach for the skies.

Mr Knott said: “I wanted to tell a story that harked back to the era of scientific discovery presented as a sideshow, as a diversion, the sadness as well as the joy of it all, and ultimately fuse these stories of human endeavour together to create a hopeful play for right now.

Joyful in part, melancholy in places, with a restless and vibrant energy – the Montgolfier Brothers for 2022. We can’t wait to share it.”

Perhaps there is a parallel between the death-defying dramatics of circus performers and the dizzying heights attained by those who created the first flying machines.

Ballooniana! is at the New Wimbledon Theatre from 22nd September 22 to October 1.
