Best places in UK to have an emergency

London is home to 76 per cent more emergency workers than any other UK region.

Across the UK, emergency lines receive a 999 call every three seconds. But which region has the largest capacity to deal with the demand?

Research from Get Licensed has looked into the number of registered emergency service workers versus population, to highlight where in the UK has the most emergency workers.

They have also looked into the number of emergency calls across the country.

The research reveals that Wales recorded the most ambulance workers per capita as of February 2023 with 2,749 emergency staff, equal to 89 per 100,000 people.

London recorded the most police officers in its region, with 403 officers per 100,000.

There are two main police forces that patrol London and a total of 35,475 officers across the region.

England’s North East region recorded the highest number of firefighters per capita with 64 per 100,000 people.

There are a total of 1,706 full-time firefighters in the region providing fire and rescue services for almost 2.7 million people.

West Midlands Police received 24,116 (per 100,000) emergency calls in 2022 which is the UK area with the highest number of police calls.

In 2022, it was found that West Midlands Police took an average of 37 seconds to answer 999 calls – which is far longer than the force’s own target of 10 seconds.

The region of Staffordshire received the least amount of 999 calls, receiving a total of 197,565 calls between January to December of 2022.

The data further revealed that July recorded the most 999 calls of any other month for all regions, with 1,045,458 calls made.

Shahzad Ali, security expert and chief executive at Get Licensed said: “Demand for emergency service workers is surging more than ever. With increased 999 calls and even more NHS stress and demand, it could be a worrying time to be in need of an ambulance, firefighter or other emergency service – especially depending on your location.

“Looking at the research it’s clear that there are certain areas which are handling the demand easier – and that could be aptly down to employees vs demand. While many don’t know it, the emergency services and SIA licence holders have immense correlation. Professionals who hold this licence support the work of emergency service workers and can help each other from stumbling further into a crisis. With increased security, first raiders, increased CCTV, fire marshals and more, we can ensure more people – whether in public, or their place of employment – feel safe and secure.

“We can provide extra public safety which can have an overall impact on incidents in public, reducing the need for emergency services. This can be anything from a security officer stopping an act of violence or a fire marshall minimising workplace risks and ensuring a safe evacuation.

“While this isn’t the answer, and the demand on emergency services needs to be addressed, we can work together to make our public and work spaces as safe as possible, minimising possible incidents and injuries.”
