New Sidcup cinema construction to start in January

Construction on Sidcup’s new cinema and library complex is due to start in January, Bexley Council has announced, after contracts finalising the work were signed this month.

The authority stated this week it had finalised plans with cinema operators Really Local Group and construction company Neillcott to build the three-screen cinema, a new library, and nine flats at the site of the former Blockbuster video store.

The council approved plans for the new high street project in October last year, with demolition works at the site finishing in November 2019.

While the coronavirus pandemic led to work on the site stalling, developers now expect work to be completed in 2022.

Really Local Group, who will fit out and run the independent cinema, already have a venue in Catford, and are looking to expand in a number of new locations which include Hayes and Bermondsey, according to the council.

Bexley council deputy leader and cabinet member for growth Louie French said the project was a welcome boost for Sidcup’s high street.

He said:“Despite this time of uncertainty for high streets generally, we are delighted to have kept this important project on track.

“Bringing these two experienced organisations on board means this exciting new project is that bit closer to becoming a reality. The new facilities will be a great addition to the high street.”

Cabinet member for places Peter Craske said: “A new library in such a central spot in Sidcup will be great for the town.

“Having the cinema attached to the library will make it a one stop shop for culture and community activities for all ages. I can’t wait to see the building take shape.”
