Tate Modern presents free programme of playful art-inspired activities for families

Visitors to the Tate Modern will be able to draw all over its walls as part of a free programme of playful art-inspired activities for families, writes Charles Harrison.

The first part of the programme, an installation by Ei Arakawa, is called Mega Please Draw Freely, and will allow visitors to complete transform the Turbine Hall by covering it with doodles, sketches, and scribbles.

Mega Please Draw Freely is inspired by Japanese artist group the Gutai group, who wanted to change the world through painting, performance and children’s play.

Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern, said: “The Gutai group put playfulness, self expression and collaboration at the heart of their work – ideas which continue to inspire new generations of artists like Ei Arakawa,” (pictured).

The floor of the Turbine Hall will be coated in a temporary surface to allow visitors to draw on it with freely provided drawing materials.

The name for the installation is inspired by Jiro Yoshihara’s 1956 Please Draw Freely.

The installation will be open from July 24 to August 29.
