Exclusive: Meet Eddie Abbew

By Sarah Tetteh

He has taken South London and the world by storm – and his message is pure and simple.

“Eat. Real. Food.” We often hear him declare as he stares down the camera as he munches on his favourite bowl of boiled eggs (with tomato sauce from Pro Prep meals – don’t forget!!), on Instagram and now his fabulous YouTube show.

Meet Eddie Abbew. A true legend. The version fans see of him all hyped-up and riled up at the thought of piling in any processed food, let alone a sausage roll into his mouth, is a far cry from the warm, gentle giant and ‘food father’ of the nation I get to meet for his exclusive interview with the South London Press.

He has taken time out of his hectic schedule of calling out major supermarkets and fast-food chains and holding them accountable for what they are serving up the public – which he believes has contributed to obesity and 9/10 health problems – many of which stem from the gut.

His mantra is simple, with real food our bodies are meant to heal themselves, and Eddie is dedicated to this cause.

It’s hardly surprising former bodybuilding champ and ex-psychiatric nurse Eddie has a huge celeb following, from TOWIE legend Gemma Collins, Peter Andre and even Boris Johnson keen to be part of his movement.

But is he even phased by this fame? Eddie, who hails from Ghana, said; “I don’t care about all that. I have had Peter Andre, and lot of TV stars DM me. I’ve even had Boris Johnson talking about me, and now Nigel Farage wanting to get involved. That’s not what I’m about. I have one message – to help the public, young people and I won’t stop until the government listens and there is a change to the food we are consuming.

“I set out to try and educate youngsters about the dangers of eating junk food. As a gym owner, as someone who trains bodybuilders, when I first started it was all about eating real food. Now, it is all ultra processed. So I set out advising young people, and they started listening. Now here we are.  ”

Eddie tries to pin-point just why now his message is getting through to people – his staggering Instagram following and Facebook Community are a testimony to his ethos and hard work.

“What is it about me that people listen? Well, I’m older. So I say it like it is. It’s the passion. I’m genuinely trying to make a difference. I want to make a difference. I get people everyday saying Eddie I changed my life, my acne has gone , I’ve fixed my depression, my anxiety, just because I changed my diet. That makes my day. That is the message I’m trying to spread.”

Despite his incredible success, Eddie stays humble as ever. He said: “It hasn’t changed me. I still have the same people around me. What makes my day is when people come up to me and say they have changed the way they eat, and it has healed them.  That’s what keeps me going. I won’t stop until people are told the truth about what is in their food.”

So what’s next for Eddie? A book, a movie, who knows. First thing’s first, a well-deserved trip to Ghana. He chuckles: “I’m planning on going with my family for some real sunshine. I haven’t been in so long.” Sounds egg-cellent.

Eddie has taken the internet by storm with his fitness tips, healthy eating advice and myth-busting videos, and has over 3 million followers across social media platforms. He is so popular that even Stormzy addressed him for forgiveness while enjoying a takeaway this week.

GRM have teamed up with former British bodybuilding champion, Iron Man contender and viral lifestyle influencer Eddie for a series that will air every week on GRM’s record-breaking YouTube Channel, with the first season consisting of 5 episodes.

His no-nonsense attitude to food and fitness has made him a rising star for 2024. ‘The F*ckin Eddie Abbew show’ will allow Eddie to delve into one trending topic each week, providing his unique personal take on everything from healthy eating, weight loss supplements, processed foods or the trending protein-heavy fad. This series will be both informative and comedic, taking on industry myths and cooking healthy recipes in a kitchen space along with his daughter Selina.
