Event organisers plan day-long street party to honour murdered Labour MP Jo Cox
A day-long street party to honour the memory of a murdered MP will take place on the streets of Southwark from Borough High Street through to Southwark Bridge Road on June 23.
The Great Get Together is inspired by the memory of the late Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, who was murdered in 2016 by Thomas Mair.
Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST), the event organisers, say that Jo Cox believed that the values of kindness, compassion and inclusivity are imperative to bridge division and create stronger communities.
This year, the day’s festivities will be spread along the Bankside where a myriad of performance, live music, local arts and culture, children’s entertainment and food traders will be set up as well as live performances from a host of special guests.
Back by popular demand is the Bake Off and Bark Off, where residents and visitors can showcase their culinary prowess and furry friends.
Joseph Bonner, vice-chairman of BOST, said: “The Great Get Together has such far-reaching goals and ambitions and we, as just one organisation in this UK-wide campaign, have certainly seen the community benefits it has garnered over the past two years.
“Joining the Jo Cox Foundation’s nationwide celebration of inclusion, tolerance and social cohesion is something we take great pride in, and this year promises to be even more spectacular with a host of activities that promise not to disappoint.”
The theme of this year’s Great Get Together is Let’s Get Back Together, providing the opportunity for people across the country to reconnect with old friends, families, communities and groups at a time when community cohesion is required more than ever.
BOST is honouring the MP’s belief that “we have more in common than that which divides us”.
