IN CAMERA’s UK Premiere takes place at BFI London Film Festival on October 13

The British Film Institute’s annual film festival has begun.

With 11 days and nights of screenings and film events across the capital this October, the BFI film festival continues its post-pandemic revival.

Making his debut feature this year, Naqqash Khalid’s satirical drama IN CAMERA will be screened on October 13 at BFI Southbank and also on October 15 at Curzon Soho.

It follows Aden, a young actor who is in a cycle of nightmarish auditions.

After he receives multiple rejections, Aden takes it upon himself to find a new part to play.

A dream and a nightmare in a blender, IN CAMERA is the first feature from writer-director Naqqash Khalid, which sees the film-maker break with the norms of conventional film-making, to make a satirical comment on contemporary race politics.

What does it feel like to be observed? Who holds the power, the one looking or the one being looked at?

He said: “To me, a film exists when it’s seen and engaged with by an audience. A film is an invitation, a dialogue, a dance.

“A film should create friction, provoke feeling and thought, it should disrupt, challenge and reflect something about the world in which it comes from and to do so, a film needs its audience.

“Watching the credits, a final time, before giving the film away, and seeing the names of everyone who put their labour into this was a really emotional experience for me.

“I’m so grateful to every single person who trusted me during this process. I honestly can’t wait to share all our work.”
