What’s On: The Breakout Club hosted by The Midi Music Company
A music company that holds quarterly events to showcase the hottest new local talent will be showing their latest instalment on November 25.
The Breakout Club, hosted by The Midi Music Company, is back this autumn with a line-up of new artists.
Head to Deptford for a night dedicated to celebrating artists with an eclectic mix of live music, open mic and new talent.
This quarter’s show will bring D-Kel & Los Bandidos’ unique hybrid of punk, reggae, indie rock and rap which combines perfectly to form an innovative, exciting and fresh new sound.
A distinctive South London rap artist and frontman, D-Kel, from Forest Hill, takes inspiration from his native London and Latin America, where his roots lie, drawing inspiration from artists such as Roots Manuva, Slaves, The Beat, Calle 13 & Tego Calderon.
The band met through their passion for similar music and a willingness to start with a DIY mentality, punk attitude and with the vision for up-tempo, feel-good music.
D-Kel said: “It’s important, especially for bands and artists such as myself who fall into that alternative not sure what we call that bracket as certain promoters won’t book us because they can’t seem to place me in a box.
“Breakout club gives the opportunity for people to hear a varied selection of talented London based musicians to perform on the same stage in which they probably would not share a stage together.
“That’s what makes the whole experience unique.”
Bold and visionary artist Toya Delazy will perform a truly 21st century sound that draws from her South African heritage – she is a Zulu princess and great granddaughter of Princess Magogo, an influential musician from South Africa – while remaining squarely rooted in the cultural identity of her adopted hometown, London.
Toya is a three times South African Music Awards winner, taking to the stage at Bestival, London Pride, the Old Blue Last, AfricaExpress and the Jazz Café, she has developed a revelatory live performance that has to be seen to be believed.
Shunaji, another performer on the night, is a producer, rapper and singer from Rome, blending old school hip-hop formulas with the dark, synth-influenced textures of trip-hop and experimental music.
Shunaji said: “There’s a lot of amazing spaces but Rye Wax in Peckham is special to me.
“It’s a great place for creative exchange. Also, basements are a comfort zone for me, I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the underground nature of it – it complements left-field artists who like myself go against the grain and carve new paths.
“I think Breakout Artists will help me to gain some new fans and meet artists who I may collaborate with in the future – it’s all about human connection and sharing the love for music.”
