New mural to be unveiled to celebrate Windrush 75th anniversary
Today marks the 75th Windrush Day, an annual celebration of the ship that brought the first post-war migrants from the Caribbean to Britain in 1948.
To celebrate this historic occasion, Brixton Village is set to unveil an awe-inspiring mural honouring the courage, hard work and resilience of the Windrush generation.
Designed by renowned graffiti artist Bunny, the mural will be unveiled today, on Windrush Day. It will be outside Brixton Village in Coldharbour Lane.
The mural captures the indelible legacy of the Windrush generation, whose many contributions have helped to create the rich culture of Brixton and beyond.
The colourful display showcases the inspiring stories of 21 trailblazing figures who were children of the Windrush community, such as Grace Jones, Gus John, Jah Shaka and Benjamin Zephaniah.
Through the mural, visitors will have the opportunity to learn the real stories about the people who have redefined British culture, with the aim of fostering a deeper appreciation for the Windrush Generation.
Commenting on the Windrush 75 celebrations in the Village, Diana Nabagereka, the general manager of Brixton Village said: “In true Brixton fashion, we want to encourage a celebration with us and for us on this day.
“We hope that, with this magnificent mural, residents and visitors alike can join the Windrush Generation to celebrate the unique stories and understand the rich culture that surrounds this market.”
