‘A double triumph’: Two trainee anaesthetists from the same trust win national award

Two trainee anaesthetists have been awarded prestigious national prizes for achieving the highest levels of distinction in their exams.

Dr Adam Blackstock, 31 from Camberwell, and Dr Alex Aulakh, 33 from Bethnal Green, are anaesthetics trainees at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT).

Dr Blackstock, said: “I feel very fortunate to have been so well supported throughout the year and studying for exams is always very much a team effort.

“It’s been a pleasure to celebrate our results together as a department.”

Dr Blackstock and Dr Aulakh have been awarded Nuffield and Mackintosh Prizes for their performance in their Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (FRCA) postgraduate exams.

Dr Alex Aulakh, said: “Working in the anaesthetic department at QEH this year has been a fantastic experience. It’s been such a flexible and supportive environment and I’ve enjoyed it very much. Being awarded a prize for the FRCA exam was a great surprise and an honour.”

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) awards the prizes to candidates who excel in the FRCA exam each year.

The exam is taken by 300 people each year from the United Kingdom and overseas but only one person can receive each award.

Dr Preeya Chakraborty, RCoA college tutor, said: “Historically we have had excellent rates of FRCA success in the Trust.

“However, it is extraordinary that two trainees from the same hospital have received both these accolades in the same year – a double triumph!

“It is a tribute to how hard working both academically and clinically Alex and Adam are.

“The anaesthetic department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) are immensely proud of their success.

“We are sure that both Alex and Adam will go on to have glittering careers in anaesthesia.”
