Agnes celebrates 100 years with family, friends and a cake

A retired nurse and care home resident at Abbotsleigh Mews Bupa Care Home has celebrated turning 100 years old.

Agnes Levien celebrated her milestone birthday surrounded by her friends and carers in Sidcup. Activities Co-ordinators at the home, Emma and Hanna, organised a birthday buffet with fizz and decorated the lounge with a balloon arch and banners in Agnes’ favourite colours.

They also gifted her with a mountain of cards and a surprise cake made by local bakery ‘Cakebox.’ To further make it a birthday to remember, Agnes was delighted to receive her congratulatory card from Her Majesty, The Queen, for reaching her 100th year.

Agnes said: “My carers did a great job at pampering me, I felt very content and relaxed. I was blown away by all my lovely cards and birthday wishes, I read every single message out loud. I am also grateful for my extra special card from the Queen. Plus, my cake tasted as good as it looked.”

Agnes was born in Germany but has lived most of her adult life in the UK. She trained as a nurse and thoroughly enjoyed building a career in caring for others.

Hanna, activities co-ordinator at Abbotsleigh Mews said: “Agnes is a wonderful lady who loves reminiscing about her past life and it is such an honour to listen to her stories. I’m so glad that we were able to provide Agnes with the celebration that she truly deserves.”

Agnes moved to Abbotsleigh Mews in May 2020 and her carers say her life as a nurse truly shines through in her thoughtful personality, even into retirement. Nowadays, Agnes enjoys taking part in activities at the home and continues taking pride in her appearance, regularly taking time to ensure that her nails are polished.
