American burger chain Wendy’s to open branch in Croydon town centre

An American burger chain is set to open up a branch in Croydon town centre.
Wendy’s announced last month it wants to bring the chain back to the UK after 21 years.
A planning application submitted to Croydon Council shows that Wendy’s has plans for the former Barclays bank on the corner of George Street and Wellesley Road.
It is expected to employ 30 full-time staff including six managers.
“This is a well-known and established brand which was prevalent in this country until about 2000,” the planning application reads.
“It is now beginning a sustained and comprehensive return to the UK…with an ambitious programme of new sites over the next few years.
“With the loss of so many traditional High Street names over recent years the return of a familiar one is to be welcomed and it will make its contribution in respect of the three dimensions to sustainable development.”
Wendy’s had a previous stint in Britain in the 80s and 90s but closed all UK stores in 1999.
If the Croydon plans are given the green light the new restaurant plans to open from 6.30am-10pm on weekdays, until 11pm on Saturdays and from 8am-10pm on Sundays.
There will be space on the ground and first floor for eat-in customers as well as the restaurant offering takeaways from customers directly and through companies like Deliveroo.
A decision is set to be made by May 18.
