Beckhams win planning permission to revamp mansion

David and Victoria Beckham have won planning permission to revamp their historic west London mansion because bits of it are falling apart.

The work will fix a crumbling terrace and garden steps at the back of the five-storey Victorian home in Holland Park.

It is feared a raised terrace reached from the hallway and garden steps at the rear of the Grade II listed property could collapse.

Weather damage and general wear and tear is said to be the cause.

Houses on the Beckhams’ street are all listed due to their historic value, and the owners have to follow strict rules if they want to carry out any work.

A report on the heritage of the Beckhams’ house says: “The houses in Holland Park are the ultimate expression of high Victorian exuberance… as well as their glorious iron and glass canopies and balcony railings.

“Care should be taken to keep the walls pale cream and not stray into greys, yellows, pinks or indeed any other colour.”

The Beckhams have been granted permission to repair and replace the terrace and stairs, sticking to their original design.

The project is being led by architect Michael Ergatoudis, who has previously helped the family with other home renovations, including a secret tunnel and wine cellar at their £6 million home in the Cotswolds.
