Body found in burning car in Clapham

A body has been discovered inside a burning car on a residential road in Clapham.

Emergency services received calls about the burning vehicle in Clarence Avenue at around 2.30am on Tuesday.

When the fire was put out by the London Fire Brigade a body was found inside the wreckage.

The Met said its initial investigations found the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A Met Police statement said: “Police were called at 02:34hrs on Tuesday, 27 December, to reports of a car on fire in Clarence Avenue, SW4.

“Officers attended along with the London Fire Brigade. After the fire was extinguished, the body of a person was found inside the car. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers believe they know the identity of the person and have informed their next of kin. Formal identification has not yet taken place. 

“The death is being treated as unexpected and initial enquiries suggest it is not suspicious. Further enquiries are taking place to establish the circumstances.”

The London Fire Brigade said: “Sadly, a person has died after a car fire on Clarence Avenue in Clapham.

“A car was destroyed by fire. A person inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Brigade was called at 0245 and the incident was over for firefighters by 0324. Fire crews from Brixton and Clapham fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
