Bromley celebrates 60 years as a London borough
Bromley council kicked off a programme of festivities this weekend to celebrate 60 years of existence as a London borough.
On April 1, 1965, the local government map of London was set, establishing the capital’s 32 boroughs.
To celebrate the special anniversary, Bromley council is urging residents to come together and take part in a host of guided walks, library lates and interactive art trails throughout April.
The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor David Jefferys, kicked things off by joining an Interactive Art Trial across Bromley Town Centre yesterday.
He said: “I am so delighted to share this special programme with residents and hope to see many of you throughout these events, as we celebrate our borough in this milestone year of our history.
“I thank the partners and resident groups who have already contributed to this wide-ranging programme and encourage others to come forward and share their plans, so we can continue to share activities throughout the year and give even more residents the opportunity to come together.”
As part of the celebrations, the Mayor will lead a walk from The Glades to St Martin’s Hill to view the Broom in flower on May 3. The Broom flower is where Bromley’s name originates.
Schools are also being encouraged to join the festivities, including a ‘1965 day’ where students dress in clothing from this time and learn more about what life was like back when Bromley was formed.
Five town centre walks will also soon be shared with residents, linking the five town halls of the District and Urban councils which came together in April 1965 to form the London Borough of Bromley.
