Bursary available for summer camp volunteers

By Tom Hussey

A bursary which supports volunteers for summer camps is looking for applicants.

The bursary will give a young person from Lewisham financial backing to cover the fees and rent for the summer camp as well as $USD500 for travel after the camp.

The bursary, launched by Camp America in Black History month, has been named The Maria Dalrymple Bursary in memory of a late Lewisham woman who worked tirelessly to achieve positive changes to the lives of young people in the borough.

Janet Henniker-Talle, president of Camp America said: “Maria worked relentlessly fundraising for her community projects.

“She was active in promoting Caribbean and African culture and advocated passionately for diverse communities.

“We are incredibly passionate about the exchange programme, and want to help as many young people as we can to experience a summer at camp.”

Every year Camp America sends thousands of young people to work in the USA at a summer camp.

Volunteers run activities for children such as football and photography, as well as working as support staff behind the scenes.

After the camp volunteers get to travel for 30 days to see the USA.

The bursary will be awarded to someone who can demonstrate a commitment to helping others in their community, or to someone who has faced their own challenges and could benefit from this programme.

Applicants will need to be nominated by a youth or social worker from community projects they have participated in.

Camp America encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply.
