Charlton fan walks from The Valley to Ipswich Town’s stadium in memory of nan

By Adam Gillham

A teenage football fan is on a gruelling 80 mile hike to watch his favourite team Charlton Athletic play away in a league one clash in Ipswich – in memory of his Nan.

Nick Hurst, 19, set off from Charlton’s home ground The Valley yesterday to walk to Ipswich Town’s Portman Road stadium in time for their clash today/tomorrow (SAT).

The youngster, from Sidcup has raised £1,000 so far for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of his nan Sylvia Cue who passed away in December 2021 aged 84 after suffering for 15 years with dementia.

His epic walk comes a year after he walked more than 60 miles to watch the Addicks play Cambridge United at Abbey stadium.

Nick said: “I’m an avid Charlton Athletic fan – I follow them home and away. I wanted to do something to remember by nan who passed away in December and this seemed a good idea at the time.

“It’s painful on the feet but it’s for a worthy cause.

“Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

“This is why I want to raise as much money as possible for the Alzheimer’s Society, in order to not only help find a cure but also to help support those affected whilst we still don’t have one.”
