Common life comes under the microscope
The children of the Wimbledon Common Nature Club and their families met for a session of “Life Under the Microscope”.
Sunday’s event at Wimbledon Common’s information centre was hosted by the Quekett Microscopical Club.
The youngsters went out on to the common looking for natural things to study under the microscope and collected mosses, lichens, leaves, seeds, grasses, pine cones and stones.
The children then returned to the centre, where Alan Wood and Joan Bingley had brought a variety of nature slides, coriander seeds, salt, birds feathers and amber for the children to examine in minute detail.
Club leader Auriel Glanville said: “We had a fascinating morning exploring so much from the natural world, and gave a big thank you to Alan and Joan for giving us such a special insight into microscopy.”
The next session of the club will be “Bird Feeders” on Sunday, March 2, from 10am to 12 noon (newcomers 9.45am to register). It is aimed at 6-14 year olds and free to attend, with donations welcome.
