Cops fear new Greggs bakery in Leicester Square could attract “crime and disorder”

A giant new Greggs bakery in Leicester Square is facing a backlash as police fear problems with “crime and disorder” if it opens later.
The popular chain wants to stay open throughout the day and night, serving late-night food and drink until 5am at its new flagship store in the West End.
But the Met has objected to the plans. In a letter to Westminster City council, a representative for the Met said: “It is our belief that if granted, the application could undermine the licensing objectives in relation to the prevention of crime and disorder.”
Greggs welcomed hundreds of customers at a grand opening for the new bakery at No. 1 Leicester Square on Monday, July 18.
Karyn Abbott, a senior licensing officer for the council, said the department was concerned about how the late-night running of the business could affect public safety, crime and disorder and child welfare.
Westminster City Council’s licensing committee will decide whether the plans can go ahead on Friday July 29.
