Council invests £1m to give ‘bustling’ street huge makeover

A council has invested almost £1million to improve one of its popular streets and make space for more market stalls and outdoor dining space for restaurants.

Since 2020, Bute Street in South Kensington has been closed to traffic to allow shoppers to socially distance and diners to eat outside.

Now Kensington and Chelsea council is making permanent changes to the street including a completely new layout to accommodate for up to 22 market stalls for the Saturday farmers’ market.

The council’s plan also includes a continuous, level footway and carriageway, planting new trees to improve air quality and a new drinking water fountain.

Works on Bute Street are set to start today with the council estimating a finish date of March 2024.

The Saturday Farmers’ Market has been relocating around the corner to Queensbury Way throughout the works.

The road will be closed to all vehicles until works are completed but the council has confirmed that businesses will be open as usual and pedestrians will be able to access the road at all times.

Councillor Cem Kemahli, lead member for planning, place and environment said: “We want to create amazing spaces across the borough.

“Bute Street is already a bustling corner of South Kensington and with new trees, new paving and a new layout we can make it a must visit destination.

“When we consulted, people wanted more space for market stalls and a new drinking fountain – great ideas that we’ve incorporated into the designs.

“This transformation will make the road greener and safer for residents and visitors alike.”
