“Devastated” mother of Sasha Johnson appeals for information about her shooting in Southwark

The mother of Sasha Johnson, the Black Lives Matter activist who was shot two weeks ago at a house party in Southwark, has urged anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.

Ms Johnson’s mother, Ellet Dalling, said: “What has happened to Sasha has left us devastated. She is currently fighting for her life in hospital with two children asking where their mummy is, what do I tell them? Someone must have information to what happened and to come forward.

“Sasha is passionate about standing up for others, please come forward and stand up for Sasha. Come forward to help us, I know it is not always easy but imagine if it was your daughter or the mother of your children. I believe there are people out there that can help.”

Ms Johnson remains in a South London hospital where she is in a critical condition.

She has undergone two surgeries to relieve pressure on her brain.

Two men and three male teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident on Wednesday May 26.

On Friday, May 28, four of them were released on bail until a date in late June. An 18-year-old man was charged with conspiracy to murder.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Ms Johnson and her two children.

It has raised more than £8,000 so far, with one anonymous donor giving £1,000.

The GoFundMe read: “Sasha Johnson is a prominent Black equal rights activist and mother of two young sons. She is currently in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound while out in Peckham on Sunday 23rd May 2021.

“This fundraiser is to support her two children while she is away and pay for any care she might need.”

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard has also called for anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “Although we have made a number of arrests, I am continuing to appeal to anyone who is yet to come forward to please speak with officers. I would also urge those who were at the party to make contact and tell us what you know. It is vital that we gather as much information as possible to establish what happened in the early hours of that Sunday morning and why.

“Sasha remains in a critical condition, and her family has been left devastated by what has happened. We are in regular contact with them, and quite rightly, they have a lot of questions that are currently unanswered. You can help us to provide them with the answers they desperately need.

“Were you in the vicinity of Consort Road, or did you see anyone fleeing the area? Please do the right thing and call us, or Crimestoppers.”

Officers were called shortly before 3am on Sunday May 23 following reports of gunshots in Consort Road, Peckham.

They attended with London Ambulance Service paramedics where they found a 27-year-old woman who had been shot.

She was later named as Sasha Johnson.

A man, believed to be aged in his 20s, also suffered a knife injury during the incident. He attended hospital and was discharged following treatment.

Ms Johnson, who works in community activism and community support and got a first in social care from Ruskin College in Oxford, has been a leading figure in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the UK and is a member of the Taking the Initiative Party’s leadership committee.
