Dulwich school campaign to raise £14K for bike sheds

It’s an unusual move for a school – Charter School in North Dulwich is urging its pupils to get behind its bike sheds.

The Friends of Charter North Dulwich on Tuesday announced the launch of its 2020-2021 fundraising campaign to raise £14,000 to build a much needed new bike shelter for the school.

The new shelter will house 84 extra bikes so more staff and students can cycle to school. It is saddled with four existing shelters which hold 40 bikes in total, are overcrowded, a safety risk, and mean some bikes are exposed to the rain.

Headteacher Christian Hicks spoke out as pupils geared up for the campaign. He said: “Already most students walk or cycle to school and we expect the shelter to encourage more active travel, particularly among students who live slightly further away.

“The new shelter is another demonstration of our twin commitments to the health and wellbeing of everyone within the school as well as the environment and local area and we are very grateful to the Friends for their continued support and generosity.”

Ms Baker, an English teacher, said: “Cycling to and from school helps clear my mind and gives me headspace, enabling me to prepare for the day ahead and unwind on the way home.”

Previous Friends of Charter North Dulwich campaigns were the 2019-2020 Astroturf campaign, the 2019 Plastic Free water fountain campaign and the 2018 LED lighting campaign.
