Firefighters tackle huge blaze at recycling plant as huge plumes of smoke cover area
Residents were warned to keep their windows closed last night as a massive fire ripped through a recycling centre, sending plumes of smoke across the sky.
Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters were called to the blaze at a scrap metal recycling plant in Factory Road, North Woolwich.
About 10 tonnes of scrap metal in open air was alight. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed there were no reports of any injuries.

Residents were advised to keep their doors and windows shut due to the heavy amount of smoke in the area.
The LFB’s 999 control officers received 29 calls about the fire.
An LFB spokesman said: “The brigade was called at 4.23pm and the fire was under control by 7.34pm.
“Fire crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Barking and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
