Fitness first – for one day at least – as Bromley school’s primary kids get moving

Staff and pupils at Downe Primary School have celebrated National Fitness Day with a whole-school athletics event.

Part of The Pioneer Academy Trust, the school organised an action-packed afternoon of sporting activity to encourage pupils to live a healthy and more active lifestyle.

The entire school, at High Elms Road, Orpington, took part in a round-robin of five different activity stations designed to get the children moving, having fun, and learning about the benefits of fitness.

To cap off the event, all students participated in a “Walk a Mile” challenge, completing four laps of the school field. This not only promoted endurance but also encouraged a sense of achievement as the students worked towards their fitness goals together.

The class that earned the most points will be crowned the winners in a special assembly on Friday. The competition saw enthusiastic participation from the school staff as well.

Having been started in 2011 by charity UK Active, National Fitness Day is a chance to highlight the role that physical activity plays in helping us lead a healthier lifestyle.

This year’s campaign theme is ‘Your Health is for Life’, and aims to encourage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to recognise and celebrate the lifelong mental and physical benefits of being active.

Matt Ferguson, head teacher at Downe Primary, said: “We all enjoyed taking part in National Fitness Day and taking part in the different activities. It was particularly rewarding to watch the children working together, supporting one another, and showing real determination during the ‘Walk a Mile’ challenge.
