Greenwich women’s boxer Dubois advances to the last eight in Olympics to raise medal hopes

Caroline Dubois has advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s lightweight boxing after a victory over America’s Rashida Ellis.

Dubois, from Greenwich, was technically superior from the opening round, striking Ellis with jabs and straight left hands.

The Londoner had a surprise in the second, confusing the 10-second warning for the bell, but Ellis was unable to take advantage.

The American was then deducted a point for hitting on the break in the third round, which extended Dubois’ lead, enabling her to box out the rest of the round for a split decision.

She told Boxing News: “She was funny. Before the bout she was all bouncing and talking, being loud and cocky but I guess that’s just the way the Americans are. I’ve earned my place and I’m coming for a gold medal. It feels like nobody knows me and nobody respects me. I don’t want a medal, I want the medal. I want it bad. I want it more than I’ve wanted anything in my life.”
