‘Amy puts patients at centre of care in Greenwich’

A Greenwich student clinched a national award for midwives.

Amy Robson, 20, picked up the Student Midwife award at the London Maternity and Midwifery event.

She said: “I was completely gobsmacked, shocked, amazed. I had no idea I would even be entered into it and so I definitely did not think I was going to win.”

Amy is in her third year at Greenwich University and she has been working at Greenwich’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital while she studies.

She said: “Uni work alongside the placement is tough, but everybody at Queens is very supportive. They’re always looking out for students.

“I like to help the women. It is a very special moment, handing over a new born baby, its a moment of completing the family. Knowing they are happy and feel safe is really rewarding.”

She moved from Northern Ireland to pursue her midwifery.

She said: “It was a big step moving to London and quite nerve-racking. But I’ve had great support from family and people at the university.”

Amy was entered for the award by her mentor Samantha Darvill, who described her as a someone who “has grown in confidence during her studies but always puts patients at the heart of care”.

When she was given the chance to bring a plus one to the ceremony, where there were seminars, talks and workshops on midwifery, she decided to take Samantha with her to show her appreciation.

She said: “We’ve got a great professional relationship and I wanted to give something back to her because she wrote such a nice statement about me.”

The award ceremony was held at the Ilec Conference Centre in Earl’s Court and the winners were chosen by a panel of judges.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham deliver more than 8,500 births a year.
